- I really appreciated Linda Zimmermann's coverage of the mysterious stone chambers in New York's Hudson Valley and New Jersey. While she takes great care to stick to the facts, each adventure to visit (or in some cases FIND) a stone chamber or huge rock structure also includes brief tales of the hike and the weather; getting up in the dark on a freezing winter solstice morning, GPS in hand, to discover whether a chamber would light up with the sun on certain calendar days, etc. You have to admire that kind of dedication!
It's fascinating to read about the many sites around the area with these amazing stone constructions, especially since hardly any locals seem aware of their existence! Linda doesn't speculate about how the huge rocks may have been moved into place, but she does offer a few ideas about who might have created them. She also indicates that these sites need to be protected and studied more, considering a number of them have simply been plowed down to make room for new construction.
And as a bonus... At the end of each stone adventure, she shared her GPS coordinates and directions when possible, if she needed permits for the visit, or if the site was on private property and not publicly accessible. Which also makes this book a great guide for hikers and history buffs, especially if you love a good mystery! - Mysterious Stone Sites in the Hudson Valley of New York and Northern New Jersey is an invaluable and long overdue survey of the numerous stone chambers, cairns, mounds, dolmens and rock walls of the region. Combining painstaking archaeo-astronomical measurements and calculations with a lively account of her adventures in locating these often elusive sites, Linda Zimmermann's book is both informative and fun to read. Her work strikes just the right balance between openness to alternative theories and proper scientific rigor that is too often lacking in this controversial field. - I grew up in the Hudson Valley and have visited many stone chambers. I thought I knew a lot about our local history... till I read Linda's book! Wow! There is a whole separate history written in Stone all around us and no one knows more about it than Linda.

Since I live in the Hudson Valley, I was intrigued by the reviewer's comments. I intend to check out the sites which are accessible. After I've read the book, I'll update this review.
