In 1950, photographer Gisèle Freund embarked on a two-week trip to Mexico, but she wouldn’t leave until two years later. There she met the legendary couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Welcomed into their home, she immersed herself in their private lives and the cultural and artistic diversity of the country, taking hundreds of photographs. These powerful photographs, among the last taken before Kahlo’s death, bear poignant witness to Frida’s beauty and talent.
Showcasing more than 100 of these rare images, many of which have never been published before, the book also includes previously unpublished commentary by Gisèle Freund about Frida Kahlo, texts by Kahlo’s biographer Gérard de Cortanze and art historian Lorraine Audric, as well as a link to a previously unreleased color film, shot by Freund, showing Diego Rivera at work.

Frida Kahlo The Gisèle Freund Photographs Gérard de Cortanze Gisèle Freund Lorriane Audric 9781419714238 Books Reviews
- VERY disappointing! This is NOT a book focused on Frida! The title is misleading.
It begins with a photo of Delores del Rio, and four pages of photos (2 colour) of a Mexican artist named David Alfaro Sequeiros, who is only mentioned in one sentence of the narration.
What follows are 19 photos of Frida, taken in three photo sessions (1 double page spread is totally out of focus! Noted to be rare colour print..except this was in 1952, when my parents were taking colour photos...), 1 of Lupe Martin, Diego's ex-wife and 36 photos of DIEGO! There are 5 photos of Frida's paintings, all in black and white, 9 of Diego's works, many in colour. 20 photos are of the interior of the house, about 10 of the garden (again, B&W). Then there are myriad photos of the "Aztec tomb" that Diego built as a museum and tomb for his and Frida's ashes.
There are seven pages of small contact photos, most duplicates of photographs already included in the book.
All very well and good if the title wasn't FRIDA KAHLO the Gisèle Freund
Photographs!!!
I don't know who edited this, but it is obviously made for $$$ and not for information about Frida. There is a lot of "filler". Who really wants to see B&W photos of Frida's paintings, for example? Or a whole lot of B&W photos of a garden?
At the very LEAST, the title needs to be changed to DIEGO RIVERA and Frida Kahlo, their home and works. At best, the Frida photographs should be the main feature, with larger prints of each. - I found this book disappointing and misleading. The title indicates photos of Frida Kahlo yet the images are almost entirely of Diego Rivera, his work, his art collection and the temple he built for himself. If I wanted to learn more about him or see pictures of him, I would’ve sought out a book about him. I had hoped to see images of Frida and learn more about her with this book.
- Great book been wanting to buy this for a while, has many great photographs. Very intimide and many which you don't usually see or are that well known.
- This is a lovely book however I was slightly disappointed to realise that the textured cover was just printed on a sleeve not an actual material cover.
- Ok, so everyone complains about this book in the reviews, but I was in it for the photos of frida and her home, and this satisfies that! Many beautiful photographs that give insight to their lifestyle.
- I bought this for my wife and she absolutely loved it! This is not a biography. It is a picture book of Fridas life, paintings, and photo history. Great coffee table book.
- great book ! full of pictures and reading about Kahlo.
- When I purchased this book it was to view photographs of Frida Kahlo. The description is totally misleading. Most of the photos are of Diego, the home they shared and the photographer.
