Ambition Redefined is a timely alternative to current women's business books that define professional ambition and success as climbing the corporate ladder. In fact, this is not a path that all women want or should feel pressured to follow. Sollmann's focus is on the more critical and widespread workplace issue for everyday women - to always work in a way that fits their lives alongside their two major caregiving roles for children and aging parents.

Sollmann debunks common assumptions such as

  • It's not "worth it" unless the salary is high. Women forfeit up to 4X their salaries every year out of the workforce to care for children and/or elderly parents - and it does not take a six-figure salary to achieve long-term financial security.
  • Finding flexible work is impossible. Sollmann shines a bright light on the ever-widening world of flexwork - where women can find many interesting and exciting ways to tuck all generations of their families into a future that is financially secure and safe.
  • Work ends at age 65. Women who leave the workforce and want to return in their 40s, 50s, or 60s will be in good company as the ranks of older workers rise.

Ambition Redefined Why the Corner Office Doesn't Work for Every Woman What to Do Instead Audible Audio Edition Kathryn Sollman Rebecca Gibel Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • For most of my twenties and thirties I worked in the corporate world—interesting jobs that involved my greatest skill—writing--but it always felt like I was wearing an itchy sweater, writing at a cold desk in a tiny cubicle, nine to five. There was no such thing as Flex-time back then--even taking so much as a personal day was frowned upon. I knew after I settled into family life, raising a child, I’d make time for work, but I did not want to leave my child or wear that itchy sweater ever again. What worried me was the niggling feeling I wouldn’t be contributing much financially if I stayed at home. The question-- where was MY middle ground--haunted me.
While reading Ambition Redefined, I came across the answer I’d been looking for “It’s Okay to Lean In Between.” Those words finally set me free. I decided to go back to school, get a higher degree, and sink my teeth into developing the best a home business I could. Now that my child is older, and I have more time to focus on creating the writing life I have always longed for, the money will follow, I have no doubt. Thank you, Kathryn, for this incredibly helpful book!
  • Kathryn speaks to women in the thick of it--building careers and trying to have a life--with wisdom but does so without being high-handed. Down-to-earth, conversational and like the mentor you wish you had, she lays out options that make sense to so many of us who eschew ego for substance. A great read for any age, but particularly those mid-career or looking to reinvent.
  • I love your message to women. It's a relief to have someone (you) acknowledge how caregiving impacts women's career choices, and that it's OKAY to not be "corner office" material - but how important, and possible, it is to persevere with flex work. This book was a wakeup call for me to further explore my financial contributions to, not only, my household today, but to plan for life's downturns. And retirement. I'm going to give this to my college-aged niece, too. Bravo!
  • In Ambition Redefined, Kathryn Sollmann examines what it means to be ambitious on your own terms. Not every woman aspires to the corner office with the highest title. Women find success in various ways, flexibility to care for children, while still remaining in the workforce. The importance of being able to support yourself and your family while continually saving and investing is so important. A must read for women at every stage of life because it's never too late to redefine yourself.
  • I read Ambition Redefined cover to cover and found it to be an insightful and compelling read. I wish I had had this book 15 years ago when I made the decision to leave the workforce to be a stay-at-home mom. It’s helpful to me now as I look to restart a brand management career. I’ve been recommending the book to friends/colleagues, especially those who have teenage daughters like mine who need to get the message that women should always work in a flexible way.
  • Ambition Redefined is an amazing resource. Not only do I think all women should read this book but men as well. It is an exceptional guide that not only brings to the forefront what women have been struggling with for ages but answers how to finally go up, over and around those walls that are blocking financial security.
  • As I read Ambition Redefined, I couldn't help thinking that every woman should have this book. I will give one to both of my daughters. It would also be a great gift for anyone graduating from high school or college.
  • What I liked most about this book is the Appendix where there are resources to look for work online and a guide to help you get your ducks inn a row if you are looking for flexible work. What I also liked about this book is that it speaks to a broad population. I'm 63 and at a flexible work crossroads after staying home with my kids.

This book talks about women who have aging parents and/or a family. It talks about protecting ourselves from the unpredictable (i.e. economic changes, divorce, death, etc) and reminded me I made some choices after having my kids that would impact me financially and in terms of my sense of purpose after the kids were grown up.

I saw those crossroads in my life where I decided not to work - and didn't fully consider what the consequences would be for me at this age. Hindsight is always 20/20 and the reason I raise this is because this book gave me insight I didn't have at the time.

What I didn't like about the book was all the statistics and at times what I felt was judgmental nature of the author on women who choose to stay home with their families or not work for other reasons. I deducted a star for that. it felt wordy and repetitive in parts.

Having said that, I think this is an excellent resource if you want to consider working and are lost about a plan for what to consider and resources to look at. The appendix is worth the price of the book as I'll be going through it systematically to help me redefine my ambition.
