On Canada's west coast, Rod's boat repair business was overwhelmed with work in the summers and underwhelmed through the long wet winters. Hearing of a small English speaking country called Belize in Central America, Rod decided to warm up the winter by driving down to check out the possibility of living and working in a country with no cold weather. As days of non-stop driving alone can be tedious, Rod contacted his cousin, Nick, who had recently moved to Los Angeles and asked him if he wanted to accompany him on his adventure. Nick agreed and then asked "Um, where is Belize?" which forms the title of this impromptu adventure, by two cousins who didn't know one another.

"A fun, entertaining and a even a little informative look at Mexico and Belize.

What happens when two men who don't know each other take off on a several thousand mile trip with limited funds, limited space and limited knowledge of the local language? This is before cell phones, GPS and all-night radio. What if they lost their wallet? What if their car was stolen? What if they got on a boat with drug dealers intent on revenge? I'm not saying any of those things did or didn't happen, but Mr. Baker has the unique ability to get himself in the oddest predicaments (traffic jam in the jungle anyone?) and an even more interesting ability to write about it while still crafting beautiful descriptions of the scenery. There's an amazing description of Mexico City that is worth reading the book for--of course, at the time, Mr. Baker and his companion are lost, arguing about who has to drive and who gets to read the map, and whose fault it is that they're lost in the first place.

I've read a lot of memoir/road trip books lately where the person seemed to take the trip for the sole sake of writing about it. This isn't that kind of book. Or, at least if it were, I think Mr. Baker would have found a better spot to dry his underwear.

This book, like the others Mr. Baker has written, is told with his understated humor, his attention to detail, and his profound insight into human nature. It's a trip you won't want to miss."

Um Where is Belize? A journey into the unknown eBook Rod Baker Reviews

  • In this memoir, author Rod Baker leaves his wife Louise and son Mike to begin an adventure by car to Belize with his distant cousin Nick. Both Rod and Nick moved to North America from their birthplace England. Rod settled in Canada and Nick in USA. Rod offers some keen insight into beginning life in a new country, "Migrants are like seeds blown in the wind who land on foreign soil and put down roots. When you emigrate, all your relatives get left behind in a whoosh of jet exhaust. Just by their disappearance, they become more valuable." I enjoyed Mr. Baker's writing style, sense of humour and the banter between the two men who are forced to become quick friends under very interesting circumstances. If you're looking for an entertaining read, about a real life adventure most of us only dream about — then this is the book for you!
  • A very pleasant read. Easy and funny.
  • A fun, entertaining and a even a little informative look at Mexico and Belize.

  • A rollicking good read full of fun, kindness and redemption! I received an advance copy of Rod Baker's third book, "Um, Where is Belize?" in which he tells the true-life tale of an epic drive from Vancouver, British Columbia to Belize in Central America. Although I very much enjoyed Baker's previous two books, I found myself thoroughly entertained in this cross between a delightful travelogue and a Thelma and Louise-like tale. No spoiler alert here but the difference was, Mr. Baker and his travel mate and cousin, Nick, lived (at times, barely) to tell the tale! Written in a descriptive, but highly humorous manner, I found myself engaged from the beginning, and had many laugh out loud moments. It's the kind of story you often wanted to shout, "No-o-o-o, don't go in there!" or "Don't do that!" but the real-life characters do anyway. Then, just when I thought for sure that I knew what would happen next, I was surprised by a rewarding and unexpected outcome. Finally, as this trip took place decades ago, I found it a heartwarming narrative about the kindness of strangers, something we seemed jaded to in the world we presently live in. Mr. Baker does a great job of shining the light on just those types of people.
  • A hilarious story of youth redisovered only to discover the author wasn’t so youthful anymore. Rod Baker recounts the story of his 14,000 km trip with a cousin he barely knew to Belize and back. I laughed numerous times at the situations they got themselves into and out of. The most important thing I learned from this story is that I don’t ever want to go to Belize!
  • Great memoir. Relatable and inspiring story of heading out on an ambitious road trip to take a break from the responsibilities of home, work and family in the spirit of seeking an adventure and reconnecting with yourself.
  • Have you ever wondered what it's like to drive from Vancouver to Belize and back in a tiny Nissan Micra, accompanied by a dubious cousin whom you last saw when he was a toddler? Oh, and imagine you also forgot your passport home.

This isn't fiction; this is Rod Baker, the owner of a boat repair shop, taking some long overdue time off. The author is a great storyteller, and when it comes to vacation he clearly doesn't fuss too much over planning in advance. His whimsical road trip balances somewhere between adventure and disaster, and I had so much fun reading this book. I very much look forward to reading more by this author.

I was a beta reader for this book and decided to write a review.
