Run the Mile You're In Finding God in Every Step Ryan Hall 0025986354374 Books Reviews

  • As someone who follows running and American marathoners pretty closely, I was excited to check out Ryan Hall’s newest book. I was aware of Ryan’s faith and the major role it has played in his running, and even though I don’t consider myself very religious, I was curious to learn more about how he has incorporated faith into his workouts, racing, and mindset.

I loved the way each chapter highlights one element of the running life — identity, pain, belief, success, failure — and delves into perspective, lessons learned, and Ryan’s deep faith. If you are a Christian runner or simply interested in one of the best distance runners in the US and what makes him tick, then there are lessons to be learned here.
  • "Run the Mile you’re in is more than a book! It pertains to everyday life. Whether you’re a runner or not this book is for you!
I highly recommend this book. It’s one of those books that can really change your outlook on life. Ryan uses his personal experiences and shows you how God has a hand in every aspect in our life.
The book is divided up into 26 miles(chapters) and has a specific topic such as Positive Focus, Comparison and Consistency to name a few.
As a running coach this is a book I will have all my athletes read!
You won’t regret reading this book! "
  • Cleverly divided into 26 chapters, Ryan Hall’s fast-paced book Run the Mile You’re In inspires and motivates through stories of his incredible life as a student athlete and then professional runner. Woven throughout the expressive life stories you will find Bible verses that connect to the stories he tells about his life and running career.

If you’re not a runner, there’s inspiration in Hall’s amazing stories of listening to God for direction guidance. And if you are a runner you’ll be motivated by Hall‘s dedication to the mental and physical challenges that running can bring. One of the best quotes in the book is “comparison sucks the life out of what we are doing. We are all on a beautiful journey, so let us be thankful for every step, even if our journey looks different from someone else’s.”
  • Ryan Hall's Run the Mile You're In, is very inspirational, motivating, and spiritually inviting. To read about Ryan's journey from the beginning to end was very emotionally inviting. He not only invites you into his journey as a runner but as well as his spiritual life throughout the course of his career. His telling of how God moved mountains throughout the trials that come with running and running professionally. As godly man Ryan kept his faith strong. After reading Ryan's book, I was able to focus on the bigger picture for myself personally as a recreational runner who is about to take on her first full marathon. Overall to be able to read about one of America's fastest distance runner is enlightening, inspirational, motivating, and spiritually moving. Thank You Ryan for sharing your story.
  • What a great book! I couldn’t put it down. Each chapter is loaded with wisdom to apply to our lives. As a runner, I love the stories of Ryan’s races and training. It’s as if I was an insider on his training team. The lessons learned by faith are ones so many of people struggle with. Ryan gives us fresh thoughts that open our awareness to how God speaks to us in a still small voice when we are listening. Sometimes what God asks us to do doesn’t make sense to us but ends working out for our good and His glory.

Ryan, thank you for sharing your story. I’ve shared this book as a must have for my coaching clients and those interested in growing their faith, improving their mindset, and pursuing excellence in their calling/career.
  • “Once we cease to be impressed by the size of our challenges, our ability to overcome them grows exponentially.” This book dives into the meaning of effort, worth, and perseverance in a way that encourages us to continue with our eyes on Christ, while recognizing that our true purpose does not lie within ourselves and our accomplishments. I believe that this writing does a wonderful job of exploring God’s purpose for us and helping to recognize it, sacrifice for it, and focus on it so that we can reach our fullest potential.
  • I am totally guilty of focusing on what God is not doing rather than focusing on what he is doing. Run The Mile You’re In is a book filled with little nuggets of wisdom and insight that you can chew on and reflect upon. It’s a book on running the race that really matters and is a book of encouragement and inspiration for a dry and weary soul. The words Ryan penned have challenged my perspective and the way I think- be ready to be challenged yourself!
  • I am so thankful for Running the Mile You’re In Finding God in every step. I couldn't put it down and read it in a day. It was good to be reminded every thing is worship if in a posture toward God. Also, the importance of consistent time in the Word and listening prayer. I have multiple callings pulling me in all directions grandchildcare, psychologist and volunteer missionary to Africa. I also enjoyed the details of Ryan’s training and races because I run for fitness with the Galloway method I’m planning to complete a 25k on the 40th anniversary of the first time I ran it. All these activities seem to take me in competing directions, but if I follow Ryan’s example I can let God be the coach of time and energy management and lift it all in worship to my Lord.

A scarred lord. A beautiful lady
Will they ever find peace or will fear drive them apart?

Kimberley Clemens wrote a letter to her aunt.
It was slightly bawdy and very bold.
But she didn’t care.
It wasn’t as though her aunt read her letters anyway.

Yet someone read it.

James Hayden IV, the Marquess of Denhallow has never read anyone else’s mail, but life in exile has made him desperate for company.

His face had been horribly disfigured.

And… thus he locked himself away from the world.

Needing a connection, he reads Kim’s letter… and dares to respond.
One letter after another changes their lives forever.

Friendship turns into a marriage of convenience.
And forces James from exile and back into the eyes of Society.

But danger not only lurks in the ballrooms of the Ton, but on the streets of London.
Can James and Kim’s fragile marriage survive the opinions of Society?
Or will James’ scars make him run, not only from the world, but from the woman who holds his heart?

Ebook Mark of The Marquess The Valiant Love Regency Romance A Historical Romance Book edition by Deborah Wilson Religion Spirituality eBooks

"While the plot was somewhat engaging, for a riff on Beauty and the Beast, that's be here the positive stops. The writing is sophomoric, with far too many abrupt sentences, and very awkward prose. There were many incorrect usages of words, and an endless supply of sentences ending with prepositions. Add to that a lot of formatting errors and triple spacing between very short paragraphs and you get a book that's a bear to read. The triple spacing is just a way to bump up the page count, and disingenuous at best. I have read a couple of this author's other books and don't remember being this disappointed."

  • James Hayden IV, the Marquess of Denhallow, had broken many of Society’s rules, but reading someone else’s letter had never been one of them – until now. Lady Macy had been refusing to read the letters from her great-niece Miss Kimberley Clemens for four years, so they sat in a pile.

Two years ago, a madman had attacked James with a knife, and carved up his face badly. The doctor tried his best to do what he could, but the scars were severe. Lady Macy had started visiting the ill, and she and James became friends. He had locked himself away in his home and would not go out, until Lady Macy claimed her hip bothered her and he had to come to her. He saw no evidence of her discomfort, yet he continued to come to see her and their friendship solidified.

James was lonely, having driven all of his friends away, so when yet another letter arrives and is cast aside by Lady Macy, he steals it and reads it. Miss Clemens begins talking about bees – very odd! It soon became obvious that Miss Clemens had hopes that Lord Louvell would stay away, despite his wealth, wishing she could surround their home with bees to make sure he avoided her. James began laughing at her silliness in describing Lord Louvell and her forced, uncomfortable interaction with him. He writes back to her and the two begin corresponding regularly, getting to know each other better and understanding how the other feels. Having her share her honest feelings to him about everything around her was a valued treasure to him. He had written to her for a moment’s entertainment, but her sincerity was changing him; she was becoming special to him. And when James wrote to her that “If I could, I would fashion a world dedicated to your happiness,” she began to fall in love with him.

Then suddenly a letter comes that changes everything. Kimberley is being forced to marry the disgusting, self-centered Lord Louvell. If James doesn’t get to her by the next day and marry her himself, he will lose her forever. All his fears about his disfigurement smother him, but he hurries to Leeds. Will he figure out how to win her when Lord Louvell has already established his claim? Would her family accept the disfigured stranger over the marriage they had arranged for her? Or can they find love, peace, and contentment with each other?

I loved this book! Learning about someone without the visual distraction can create a surprisingly deep and lasting bond. They wrote to each other, knew how each other felt about things, what was important to the other, what caused them pain – and they learned to care deeply. This was a beautiful story, great pacing, and wonderful characters that were real and likable. This is one of those stories that will touch your heart. Don’t miss reading it for yourself to see what they must overcome and whether it will be strong enough to last.
  • While the plot was somewhat engaging, for a riff on Beauty and the Beast, that's be here the positive stops. The writing is sophomoric, with far too many abrupt sentences, and very awkward prose. • Loved, loved, loved this book! Most of the characters from Deborah Wilson's previous "Valiant Love" series are in this story. It was like being able to catch up with old friends. (I just love this series) It held a range of emotions from sadness, humor, disgust, anger and love. The feelings are realistic and relatable. It was easy to identify with the character's emotions. The sadness can be summed up by this quote from the book "After everything he'd done for her, he deserved happiness. Admiration. He would have it. She would crush him with it." I think that speaks for itself. At the beginning, I had to laugh at the hysterical audacity of Miss Kimberley Clemens. She is extremely delightful with her forthright and imaginative musings, which she only shares with Lord James Hayden IV, Marquess of Denhallow. She catches his attention because he read her letter written to her Aunt May who is his neighbor. Their romance and relationship is full of the pain and sorrow from their past. But there is also kindness, devotion and loyalty in this book. Together they embark on a quest to be there for each other, to support each other, to grant each other a chance for reprieve from the demands of society and to heal each other. Kim gets James to acknowledge he needs to reach out to a group of men that were caught up in the horror he experienced two years prior. When in London, while Kim is being introduced to society, he is meeting with the four men with a shared experience. The men come to a conclusion that their ordeal is not over. This book will take you on a rollercoaster ride were the highs are high and the lows are low. There are twists and turns in the storyline that make it unpredictable to really know the ending. My deduction of how things would end were way off base. I did not see the ending coming. An excellent read that I highly recommend.

  • Descartes famously said “I think, therefore I am.”
Today’s mantra is “I’m overloaded and anxious.”
In their new book, “The Power of Agency”, Drs.
Napper and Rao unpack those two conditions
with which I am uncomfortably familiar…..even though
I’m retired, a widow, and have no children living
at home. This is a very embarrassing admission.

The word “Agency” jumped out at me and I thought okay
just another buzz word and yet another self-help book.
However their instructions in the Preface intrigued me

    1. You are under no obligation to read this book.
    2. Should you decide to read on, you are under no
    obligation to finish.
    3. Should you finish, you are under no obligation to
adopt all seven principles we recommend.

So of course I took that as a challenge, read every page and
suggest you do too. The essential message is “You are in control”.
Something we’ve all heard before but the authors make their
case in a very accessible way.

“The 7 Principles to Conquer Obstacles, Make Effective Decisions
and Create a Life on Your Own Terms” is based upon their clinical experience
and psychological research. The book is a fresh guide for anyone who wants
to get off the dreaded “treadmill”.
  • This thoughtful well-written book could not have come at a better time for me. As Drs. Napper and Rao note we are often too overwhelmed to experience our agency in life. Reading this book was a wake-up call. Full of great stories and pertinent research that I am applying to my life right now. I think I know myself well and I tend to be proactive but I got great benefit out of every chapter. What I most valued what the order of the chapters ending up with an outstanding chapter on decision making which I put to use immediately.

The first chapter is entitled Control Stimuli – that is essential for reducing my sense of overwhelm. The second chapter is The Company you Keep – led me to make sure to be in touch with some key people who have been sliding out of my life. The third chapter Respect Your Body is not an exhortation for more exercise but an invitation to understand our body-mind relationship better. Napper and Rao referred me to an excellent resource, Why Your Brain Needs More Downtime. Just one example of the outstanding resources that I have been learning about as I read this book.

Reflect, Decide, Act With Agency is the final chapter which brings their work together in a powerful way. I’m pretty familiar with decision making models and this was very accessible. I am facing some difficult decisions right now and I have learned a lot from the one that the authors suggest. I'm thrilled! I needed help and I got it from these friendly, supportive, savvy psychologists. This is a dynamic handbook for living well in our overwhelming age and I recommend it highly
  • This book is amazing! I had no idea what Agency was before this book. As a working mom I wear many different hats and learning about having Agency has been instrumental in changing how I approach everything! For my child I am working on helping him to develop his own inner agent. I have used tools from the book to work on not only my long term goals, but with my day to day with professional and personal interactions. For me I feel empowered with the concept of having Agency and taking back control in my life professionally and interpersonally. The book is a great guide and resource to getting unstuck, uncovering your own potential and taking back the control and becoming empowered to tackle anything.
  • Drs. Napper and Rao created an easy to read and practical book on how to master Agency in your life. I loved the structure of the book - very early on there are self assessment tools to help you target areas of focus specific to you. There's even the option of skipping around the chapters to get right into tools to help you gain control/bring order and purpose and minimize that feeling of overwhelm. They provide specific examples from their many years of experience in their respective fields. This is hands down one of the best "self-help" books that I have ever read.
  • The Power Of Agency is truly a game-changer. If you are seeking a new perspective on how to construct a purposeful life amidst the myriad of modern day demands, this is a book worth reading. Beyond an easy read that balances real-life examples with scientific rigor, the authors offer explicit recommendations that are easy to put into practice. Great for those seeking mindfulness both personally and professionally.
  • Navigating the world is increasingly complex, and it is increasingly difficult to do so effectively while remaining true to yourself. More than simple directions, this book provides you tools to envision your destination, successfully chart your own course, and arrive safely. Insightful, charming, and easy to read, it's a must for any modern-day explorer. I hope to run into you all along the way!
  • A great book with easy to implement principles that have helped bring a sense of balance to everyday life. If one is feeling overwhelmed, unfulfilled or just needing to change some things I would highly recommend this book.
  • Awesome book!

Rtfm Red Team Field Manual 8601416637778 Computer Science Books Reviews

  • These are all fun and stuff, but there needs to be a few actual reviews.

This book is essentially a decade's worth of notes from an experienced network security engineer or pen tester. It looks like someone published an evernote notebook. Formatting is inconsistent and at times confusing. There is a fair amount of duplication. Placeholders are inconsistent. There is no descriptive text or explanatory notes. It is a list of commands, and nothing more.

If you are an experienced command line user, it is pretty awesome.

That said, with around 2000 commands in the book, there in exactly one page of index. It is impossible to find anything. If it is windows, that's great, narrows things down to about 30 pages that you have to flip through to find what you want. Even though I often know exactly what I am looking for, I still end up flipping through nearly every page in the book to find it. That is frustrating.

It's true that everything here can be found elsewhere online, but that's a lot like saying that a thesaurus is just a list of words that you can find online. The proper formatting of actually useful DOS net commands, for instance, is a great example of why the book is more useful than a Google search.

I'd say this is pretty much a must-own book for anyone that has to work with computers. If you are in charge of security or testing, even better. I wish it was better indexed, but can't have everything. Certainly worth the money.
  • This pamphlet (not really a book at 83 pages) is a good reference for those who don't use these tools on a regular basis. Covers (VERY briefly) Linux/Unix tools, Windows tools, and exploits used against web servers, databases, and wireless networks. This read will not make you a hacker by any stretch of the imagination. Simply a quick reference for tools used by power users, system admins and pen testers.

The one big gripe I have with it is the print. It's hard enough to read in full daylight, let alone sitting in a dimly lit room with nothing but the glow of your LED monitor for light.
  • This is a reference book that already presumes you know what you're doing with penetration testing and tools related to that. It's not going to teach you what to do or how to use various tools, but what it will do is be a handy, organized place to lookup a command that you may have forgotten how to use. For that 5 stars all the way. If there's any criticism I guess the type could be a bit larger. Maybe all the info in it is available online in other places. But having it all in one place is very handy. This is a compact, well organized reference that every pen tester should own.
  • Very slight book, much more comprehensive references exist - this is all very available information. Still, a small subset could have proved useful - except that the binding make the book impossible to lie flat, and even if you can manage to read the headings, the text will elude you. Tiny, 4-5 pt gray font - make this book pretty useless. Will be returning since I already have books with this information...and I can actually read the type without a magnifying glass.
  • Great reference, though it's already showing age (some commands won't work, even for the latest operating systems). But the gist of the commands is correct and the thought processes behind it them are clear and easy to understand while pen testing, so a quick Google is a good remedy for some of the more obscure ones. Maybe needs a new updated version soon? Otherwise fantastic.
  • Sure, it's a Reference Booklet, it's WAY FAR from even trying to be a manual...

83 pages as many others have said, with a huge amount of blank space. Sure you can get some commands you'd get by opening a second window and typing help...

The booklet saves around 4min if you're fast enough or even less if you google search.
The print should cost around 2 dollars with the information it has...

    GOOD
    It's small, pretty portable.
It has a note section which is pretty useful and cute

    BAD
If it doesn't pass out as a communist manual then you're on the bright side and you probably don't need it just google search.
Wanna make your own duck scripts? TOO BAD , this ain't gonna help
  • This is a skinny little book but it's packed with all kinds of useful information. I feel pretty comfortable in both a windows command prompt and a linux terminal and many of these items in this book are completely new to me. Great resource.
  • This product has all those little things that elude human memory in one place. If you're a penetration tester or network administrator, this is a great "reference" to keep in your kit bag. It will help you avoid searching the Internet for that one article you read one time 10 years ago by showing you the relevant options for the command line command you're trying to use on the page in front of you. Also has a ton of network references (like the CIDR blocking to bits to subnet masks stuff). If you can do most of it in your head, but need the occasional memory boost, this book is a GREAT companion.

The Importance of Being Earnest Oscar Wilde Books Reviews

  • Written in 1915, The Importance of Being Ernest takes on the idle nobility of London and their ceaseless hunt for unique and clever entertainment, matrimony and mistresses.

Combining a rapier wit, a sense for the ridiculous that could give Monty Python a run for its money and a scathing indictment of the uselessness of the upperclasses, Wilde pulls no punches in this humorous, silly, outrageous tale of the odd couple of single men and their antics as they each force life changing epiphanies out of each other causing shocking results.

As these nobility were together at musicales, balls, parties, and dinners virtually every night during the season, it created an environment where witty and clever conversation became a requirement to being a successful guest, or your dinner companions, card players dance partners and potential suitors would think you were dull, or shockingly simple. Filthy rich covered a lot of sins, but everyone else had to be entertaining.

This play revolves around two very different men Jack and Algernon. Jack is not noble, nor is he clever. He is a responsible man who is in love with Algernon's cousin Gwendolin. He gets frustrated by Algernon's trivial nature his witty banter and his capacity for causing trouble, yet they remain friends.

Wilde takes this a step further by having Algernon have all the negative characteristics of a noble he's impoverished, immoral, corrupting, lazy, unethical, revels in lying, loves to take risks and cause trouble. He is also amazingly attractive, extremely charming at times and has very expensive taste in clothing. His wit is unparalleled. He maligns love, marriage and family among the many topics at which he takes aim. He is my favorite character in the play.

In the first act, Jack drops in on Algernon at his home in London uninvited. Algernon is expecting a visit from his stuffy Aunt Augusta and cousin Gwendolin. The repartee between the two men during this act is the best in the play.

Wilde not only skewers the nobility for their entertainment and courting practices, but also their behaviors, reading and conventional wisdom. You can expect many extreme occurrences. Secret identities are discovered not once, but twice. Two marriage proposals are tendered and there is much chaos. A Count of Monte Christo mystery is solved based on a simple accessory. Romance novels take many direct hits as being excessively silly. A fake person died in Paris and was reanimated in the English countryside on the same day. Old women play pretend better than children.

Luckily, everyone changes for the better - they become more like Algernon. The Importance of Being Ernest; he finally becomes himself.

There is an art to using language so skillfully with such elan. It was a joy to read. This play was just a kick in the pants.

    Highly Recommended!
  • an everything I ever read be like this? Sparkly and caustic and just kind of alive? I would spend my days lost in words.

Oscar Wilde is undoubtedly one of those rare real life quotemachines whom I'm undyingly jealous of. You know, those people who manage to speak as though their words were meant to be graven for the ages and not just immediately swallowed up by the void. From profundity to wittiness, he has a knack for presenting small truths in exquisite packages.

I suspect that every review of this play quickly devolves to listing the best quotations and who am I to upset tradition?

All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his.

The only way to behave to a woman is to make love to her, if she is pretty, and to some one else, if she is plain.

Well, I can't eat muffins in an agitated manner. The butter would probably get on my cuffs. One should always eat muffins quite calmly. It is the only way to eat them.

I dislike arguments of any kind. They are always vulgar, and often convincing.

The very essence of romance is uncertainty. If ever I get married, I'll certainly try to forget the fact.

Humor, tips on proper muffin consumption, unserious lessons on the importance (though truly more so, the unimportance) of sincerity. Wilde is always ready to entertain.
  • Oscar Wilde is one of my favorites because his writing is tongue-in-cheek and he is known for being so off-the-wall that in his time he was controversial enough that he and his works were banned in many markets and he was jailed from time to time, which didn't seem to faze him. Love that about anyone, writer or not. "The Importance of Being Earnest" is strange enough that you never know what direction it is to going to take. This is a work you cannot skim over; you really need to take your time reading it to get the full meaning (and catch all the chuckles). Definitely not for someone who wants a fast, throwaway read; this one makes you think. I selected this particular edition because (1) it was free and (2) reviews stated it was better edited than the others. I'm glad I did. Having read the book before, I was not disappointed; nothing was left out (and I love an edition that doesn't have words misspelled or incomplete sentences!) If you love the slightly outlandish and a story that has twists and turns, you should definitely read this one.
  • I happened to get this book from by chance and got it since it dint cost me anything )
I loved the humor element in the book, so subtle and so to the point .

The story is simple, 2 guys in love with 2 females. Both of them portraying themselves as EARNEST in front of the females. Both the females infatuated with the name Earnest and wanting to marry someone with the same name.
The story moving to a chaos and how a small mystery getting solved in the end clearing the chaos and ending in an HAPPILY EVER AFTER moment.

Loved the story and narration awesome book.

    5/5 from me

    Devil D
  • This was silly, and fun. Rather light, but with moments of sociological insights that are timeless. The thing that struck me the most was how Monty Pythonic it was, and in a snap I realized of course the boys were influenced by Mr. Wilde. Anyway, this is the best place to start if you want to catch up on classic English literature. Short, funny and sweet.
  • Review is for this edition, not the classic Wilde drama. Put simply, there is NO TABLE OF CONTENTS. This is the very least you can expect from an eBook these days. Really there should be a TOC, illustrations, introduction and essays. There are none of these things. The fact that there is no Table of Contents which is the very least a publisher can do when putting out an eBook means ONE STAR for lameness.
